1. Unused hall passes will NO longer count as extra credit at the end of the term.

2. In order to use a hall pass, you must have it with you or you will lose 40 of your weekly citizenship points. Once you are down to zero points for the week, you may not use a hall pass.

Math, athletics and you

You may or may not know that I taught High School in England, with the Department of Defense, for a number of years during the early years of my teaching career. My second year in England, I taught a Trig course with some twenty students made mostly of Juniors and a few Seniors. One of those Juniors also played on the Girls' Basketball team which I coached at the High School. Two years later, her little brother was one of my 9th grade players on the Boys' JV basketball team which I coached. When this family left the military, they moved here to Utah and reside currently in Layton. They and I became very good friends in England and have stayed in touch these many years.

I will be offering a test retake in class on Wednesday, December 22, 2011. This means you will NOT need to stay after school to retake the test in Knight Discovery tutoring.

Those who scored well on their original test will have extra credit offered to them.

I have reviewed last Friday's test with all classes. Those retaking are welcome to use their class notes on this test in addition to their other resources (old tests, old assignments and calculator). I ALWAYS record the retake score. Please take advantage of this opportunity to make sure you have the concepts learned and to bring your grades up.

Test retake announcement

Because of illness yesterday and inadvertently taking the retake tests home with me Tuesday after tutoring, I will offer one extra day for this past week's retake to make up for my error. If you cannot come in today after school to retake, you may come see me directly after school tomorrow. Please bring your old test with you. I will exchange the retake for the old test. You may take this home and do it there instead of staying at school. Please have your guardian sign the retake, telling me you did not cheat and no one helped you.

WITHOUT THE GUARDIAN SIGNATURE, THE RETAKE TEST WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. THESE TESTS ARE DUE BACK MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2011, WHEN YOU COME TO CLASS.

At the beginning of a school year, especially for incoming new 7th graders, there can be some "growing pains" and "time of transition", going from one teacher all day to seven different teachers per day. Add to that trying to get around in a building with which one is unfamiliar and managing seven different sets of "rules and expectations", it is easy to see why some students, (and even parents!) feel overwhelmed.

Yesterday, I had to have blood drawn at the doctor's office. As the blood technician was taking my blood, I asked her how much blood the human body contains. She said she did not know, but that it took one hundred of the blood vials to make a pint.

I get so angry with advertisers who think we, the public, do not know math. And, when they try to deceive us with their "great sales", I get "hot" under the collar. Here is a perfect example:

The other night, I went to the store to buy some groceries. One item I purchased was Fiber One bars. There were two sizes of boxes offered, one with five fiber bars, and one with ten. The one with ten was priced at $5.49 and advertised itself with the sign "save money by buying this". The box with five bars was priced at $2.69.

Many years ago, as a young and shy nine-year old, my life was filled with many new and varied experiences. I was exploring the world around me and discovering places I liked to be. One such place was my fourth grade classroom with my teacher, Mrs. Doxey. She was demanding, structured, always prodding me to do more, challenging, but inviting. Yet, she always made me feel that I could do anything. She, like my parents, was sparking my quest for learning.

Vera Igamera and the Big Dance

Some thirteen years ago, I was trying to come up with a clever way of teaching students about positive and negative numbers. I wanted to create something visual to help them learn this sometimes-difficult concept.

I decided to try my hand at writing a story. Thus, the birth of "Vera Iggamera and the Big Dance." I chose bees to help teach the concept- good bees versus bad bees- positives and negatives. I wanted to show that: positives added together, negatives added together, and when positives and negatives "hung out together", they made each other sick and all fell to the floor, creating a "zero" or "zero pair".
